How are concussions normally identified in the hospital emergency room?

Surprisingly, they are not! ER physicians are motivated to ensure that the patient has not sustained a life-threatening injury, such as a brain bleed. A proper concussion evaluation normally occurs a day or so after leaving the ER.

What hospital-based diagnostic procedures are even capable of providing objective evidence of a concussion?

Again surprisingly, there are none! ER physicians will most likely perform a CT scan which is intended to identify a brain bleed. With a negative CT, there are no other procedures performed in the ER that could identify a concussion.

Once a head-injured patient is released from the ER, are there procedures that can be performed to provide objective evidence of a concussion?
